Sonic Drive-in restaurants or stores are a US based fast food with over 3,500 restaurants across 45 different states in the United States.
Popularly known as the sonic, and written as SONIC, the sonic-drive in restaurant is ranked 10th in the United States in the fast food setup and dinning. With its head quarter at Oklahoma city, SONIC has been in business since the 1950s. Though it was incorporated in 1978 in Delaware.
The company has total revenue of 100 million with a net profit of 18 million.
What Does Sonic Offer
The main course menu of SONIC consists of French fries and Hamburgers with sidelines like chili dogs, corn dogs and onion rings. They do offer mouth watering toaster sandwiches with a drink menu of Drink Shakes, Slushes and soft drinks.
One thing also make Sonic stand out from all other fast food restaurant, in that they are the only ones with the option of combining various flavors of their favorite drinks to create an all together different and unique one.
And finally, you have the yummylicious deserts like your banana splits and sundae
With the same taste, menu and arrangement as the drive-in restaurant is the Sonic beach. It has all its restaurants located at beach sides with an outdoor sitting facility with a TV and items like popcorn shrimps, pork sandwiches, and philly cheese steaks. All sonic beach restaurants also offer bear and wine along side their meals.
How it all started
Troy N. Smith Sr. founder of Sonic, returned home after the World War II, where he worked as a milkman. He then decided to work delivering bread due to the fact that bread was not as heavy as milk. He later purchased a small cottage café in Shawnee, Oklahoma. After a while, he sold it and started a fast food restaurant.
He later entered into a business partnership to purchase a 5 acre land with a log house and a walk up root beer stand. It was named Top Hat. Customers would park anywhere and come in to make their orders.
It was a very good business as they were selling hamburgers, steaks, hot dogs, root beer and they were earning around $700 a week. But on a trip to Louisiana, he saw a drive-in that used speakers for ordering. This he thought would make his sales sky rocket if he started using speaker. This was of course true, as he had more patronage. Smith later on bought out his partner and had the intention of an expansion for the business.
The name Top Hat was actually changed in 1959 to Sonic, seeing that the Top Hat name was already trademarked. The new name was fitting for their slogan which was “service with the speed of sound”.
The business had a lot of potentials and they started franchising, but they never had a formal business plan. They simply charged a penny extra on each item of sonic sold at franchise and split the collection in halves.
Between 1960 and 1970 the company started taking franchising seriously as they had a section that handled the provision of equipment, business plans and operational structures to franchises.
This recorded a significant expansion in the business, and they experienced increased numbers of drive-ins. From there Sonic opened more than 100 drive in outlets in 5 years. In 1972, they now had about 167 outlets, which now moved to about 1000 branches in 1978.
In 1990, there was a new leadership, Stephen Lynn, who revamped the company and explored more areas that were not successful in the past. By now the company had started to boom and it became a household name in the nation.
So began the journey of Sonic.
Around 1997, Sonic started its first television advertisement. During the early 1980s, actor Tom Bosley was a major feature in the company’s commercials.
Around 1987 to 1993 was another memorable period in the company’s advertising campaign which featured Frankie Avalon who was an actor, singer and a teen idol. In 1999 the company started a new campaign featuring the character Katie. Then around 2000 to 2003, the company was actively involved with NASCAR.
From 2004, the company started advertising nationally using improvisational actors. The first were T.J Jagodowski and Peter Grosz. Other series of Ads which involved Duos improvisational actors also started. Actors were, Kate Rich and sayjal Joshi, Molly Erdman and Brian Huskey, and Emily Wilson and Tim Baltz. In 2010, new dimensions were seen in the Ads section of the company, this was prior to an audition done, which birthed the new Ads that featured carhops from Wisconsin and Austin, from Texas.
In 2012, the “two guys” commercials came back on air. While in 2018, Sonic supplemented the “two guys” commercial with a complementary “two gals” commercials. The “two gals” commercial was played by Ellie Kemper and Jane Krakowski.
Then they also introduced the talk to sonic survey, which now has been a glorious site amongst customers nationally.
